How does smart charging work based on cost preferences on a dual-rate tariff?

Modified on Wed, 11 Sep at 5:36 AM

To enable Smart Charging on a dual-rate tariff, follow these steps:

  • Set Energy and Timing: Specify the amount of energy you wish to consume and your desired "ready by" time. The system will first attempt to fulfill this energy requirement during off-peak hours. If this isn't possible, it will schedule additional charging sessions outside of off-peak times to meet your needs.
  • Monitor Charging Status: If your car reaches a full charge before hitting the energy target, the charging will stop, and the status will switch to 'Suspended EV,' indicating no further charge is being accepted. The same schedule will automatically be recreated for future charging sessions based on the specified target.
  • Optimize Off-Peak Charging: For effective use of off-peak hours, set a realistic energy target. Note that Electric Miles does not track real-time battery status but calculates based on your monetary target. For instance, if you aim to spend £10.00 with an off-peak rate of 30 pence per kWh and a charger output of 7.2 kWh, the app will estimate a roughly 4-hour charging schedule. If off-peak hours are shorter, the app will configure a pre-off-peak schedule to maximize charging within the available time. Keep in mind that your battery’s capacity may limit the total charge, potentially ending before the off-peak period concludes.
